Addressing Opioid Use Disorders Among LGBT People Through Trauma-informed Care and Behavioral Health Integration —
Dr. Keuroghlian will describe the epidemiology of opioid use disorders in the LGBT population, while identifying LGBT subpopulations at increased risk. He will then discuss best practices in addressing opioid use disorders among LGBT people. This program was produced by The National LGBT Health Education Center: A Program of the Fenway Institute.

Conducting Assessments — Presented by Pamela Luckett, MCC, LPC, CTTS, Conducting Assessments reviews clinical skills and techniques needed to appropriately conduct an intake assessment. The results of the initial assessment guides the client’s level of care and treatment plan.

Hepatitis C — Dr. Svenja Albrecht provides a comprehensive update on Hepatitis C. Dr. Albrecht is an Infectious Disease physician and has worked at the University of Mississippi Medical Center since 2007. She is the recipient of numerous honors and recognitions and is widely published in peer-reviewed journals.

Introduction to Medication Assisted Treatment —This introductory course will introduce the participant to the current FDA approved medications for treating opioid use disorders. The learner will be able to describe the role of medications in a comprehensive treatment plan. Lastly, the participant will apply basic concepts to clinical scenarios.

Introduction to Motivational Interviewing —This interactive course introduces the participant to Motivational Interviewing. Research suggests that motivational interviewing is effective for those with alcohol or substance use disorders. This method allows the counselor to guide the individual to discover their source of motivation and teaches the client to become self-efficient.

Introduction to Providing Quality Care to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender ClientsThis module provides a basic introduction to LGBT health and effective communication. Additionally, the participant will learn ways to provide affirming and inclusive care to LGBT clients. MSBHLN acknowledges the National LGBT Health Education Center. Marijuana: Physiological and Policy Impacts on Children and Adolescents —Adolescents are developmentally primed to use drugs, including marijuana, and develop substance use disorders. The effects of marijuana on the adolescent brain are often underestimated. Through the use of functional brain scans, we now know that brain development is not complete until around age 26. In this module, the learner will be challenged to consider how evolving marijuana policies can prove detrimental for our children and adolescents.

Motivational Interviewing: Trading the Stick for a Carrot —This course is consistent with Practice Dimension V of SAMHSA’s Addiction Counseling Competencies. Participant will:

  • Learn a person-centered approach that has demonstrated effectiveness with substance use disorders.
  • Learn to facilitate the client’s engagement in the treatment and recovery process.
  • Learn to assess the client’s readiness for change.
  • Learn to implement motivational techniques.
  • Learn to identify and document change on the client.

Narcan Training — Narcan is the first FDA approved naloxone nasal spray. The active agent in the Narcan displaces opioids from receptors in the brain, immediately reversing an overdose. Learn about this live-saving drug as Angela Mallette, outreach coordinator for Stand Up Mississippi, presents training on the use of Narcan.

Overview of Medicaid in Mississippi Webinar — In this recorded webinar, Mark Leiker, Director of the Office of Mental Health for the Mississippi Division of Medicaid, provides an overview of Medicaid in the state of Mississippi.

The Language of Recovery — Words are powerful. The words we use when discussing behavioral and mental health can unfortunately contribute to further bias and stigmatization. However, by knowing and using the language of recovery, one can engage and effectively respond to prejudice, stigma and discrimination.

Through a Trauma Informed Lens: Rethinking Addiction Treatment —Join Debbie Ruisard, DSW, LCSW, LCADC as she discusses the view of addiction from a trauma survivors viewpoint. This client-centered, empathic approach will change the way some view substance use disorders and allow for a more compassionate approach for these clients.

Tuberculosis Update — Dr. Risa Webb, infectious disease specialist with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, presents an update on tuberculosis in Mississippi. This informative session will discuss disease transmission, treatment, and trends related to TB diagnoses.
