Overdoses and the Black Community
Though it has been rising for more than a decade, the death rate from drug overdoses increased sharply in the U.S. after the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. The data shows that since 2015, the rate of drug overdose deaths among the Black Community have outpaced other groups. According to one study the death rate among Black individuals increased from 24.7 in 2019 to 36.8 in 2020—16.3% higher than among Whites.
